La Pompe Jazz
February 29, 2020
La Pompe Jazz is a gypsy-jazz-inspired quartet of younger musicians who have lit up the Denver music scene since 2013. A welcome sound and solid for dancing. Their band name in French means “the pump”; I think this alludes to their driving rhythmic music made by pumping their arms across their string instruments. I like the way they describe themselves on their web site (excerpted):
“La Pompe Jazz is inspired by a love of classical “Hot Club” style jazz. We are a group of musicians from Denver sharing an exploration of Gypsy jazz, blues, and American jazz standards with our own interpretations. We have become noted in the local swing scene with performances at many of the top dance nights. We’ve also brought our music to a wide range of audiences in our performances at the Five Points Jazz Festival, the 1940s Ball, the Underground Music Showcase, the Westword Music Showcase, and City Park Jazz.
“While we have always paid homage to the heroes of the genres we enjoy – Django Reinhardt, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Nat King Cole, Fats Waller, etc. – we’ve also created original compositions that we think present a new fusion of the vintage and modern. Our instrumentation gives a folksy, rustic variant to the traditional jazz sound and lets us dabble in other genres from country to rock. Covering the genre spectrum with string instruments and Colorado pride, we are La Pompe Jazz.”

The third Saturday swing dances mainly feature classic, big-band-era styled orchestras and their modern offshoots.
The fifth Saturday swing dances generally feature dance bands of somewhat different styles, but still swing.
Our dances focus mostly on what is generally called six-count swing, not heavily oriented towards lindy-swing.
Our bands generally also play a few dance numbers each evening in other couples-dance styles; cha-cha-cha, waltz, ballads, rumba, and etcetera.
This swing series is sponsored by American Vernacular Dance, a member group of the Boulder Dance Coalition.
