Always the best bands!
The Flatirons Jazz Orchestra
Featuring Deborah Stafford
This is a full-on, seventeen member big band lead by “Sticks” Wilson on the trap set. Classic, energetic, steady and powerful right through the end of the night. All the classics from the Big-Band-Era and a clean, driving sound. Deborah Stafford is excellent with vocal emanations that rouse and satisfy.
Expect some cross-over from other dance circles, and do the Shim-Sham with Tuxedo Junction in the second set. This is a band you can depend upon for great music for swing dancing. They have been playing the Dickens Opera House, the Buffalo Rose, The Longmont Jazz Fest, and the WWII Balls. I would say that Sticks is the hardest-working swing band leader in the Front Range.
This dance party – on the night after Valentine’s Day – will also have a “Sweetheart” theme, mostly reflected in the songs. Do not fret if you do not arrive with a date. This is a mixed crowd with lots of mingling and socializing. All welcome: couples, singles, groups, young, older, beginner dancers and experts.
Flatirons is a most favored swing orchestra at the Avalon Ballroom – with the largest cushioned dance floor in Colorado! I’m excited about this next appearance of this orchestra on the big Avalon stage, with our grand piano and excellent audio. Please join us!

The Avalon Ballroom is Colorado’s premier social dance venue, with a large cushioned oak dance floor, excellent audio, and smooth acoustics.
We are known for our welcoming attitude and community spirit.
Gender-balance tends to be quite good.
For weather and other scheduling alerts see the Event Calendar; we rarely cancel a swing dance due to weather.

The third Saturday swing dances mainly feature classic, big-band-era styled orchestras and their modern offshoots.
The fifth Saturday swing dances generally feature dance bands of somewhat different styles, but still swing.
Our dances focus mostly on what is generally called six-count swing, not heavily oriented towards lindy-swing.
Our bands generally also play a few dance numbers each evening in other couples-dance styles; cha-cha-cha, waltz, ballads, rumba, and etcetera.
This swing series is sponsored by American Vernacular Dance, a member group of the Boulder Dance Coalition.
